IMPR. Machine fondant d'un bloc chaque ligne de caractères d'imprimerie composée sur un clavier (abrév. fam. lino). Matrices d'une linotype. La « Robertson » (1922) emprunte encore à la linotype son clavier et ses magasins (Civilis. écr., 1939, p. 8-6). V. façonneur ex. de ROUSSEAU, Hist. techn. et invent., 1967, p. 306.
— En appos. Le lino-typographe composant à la machine « linotype » ou analogue — procède différemment. Pour lui, les caractères n'existent pas : il n'utilise que leurs matrices, avec lesquelles sont fondues des lignes-bloc (COSTON, A.B.C. journ., 1952, p. 157).
Rem. On trouve parfois linotype avec une majuscule (cf. notamment Lar. Lang. fr.).
